For the first time in more than a decade, Palestine Police Department will have motorcycles in its fleet of vehicles, moving the department closer to its ultimate goal of becoming a more “modern future-focused” police department.

PPD purchased two Harley-Davidson motorcycles from the Lancaster Police Department for a total of $14,000, Chief Andy Harvey said. PPD is using money from the seizure funds to purchase the motorcycles, leaving the city free of all cost, he said.

“I think they [motorcycles] are practical and it also shows our commitment to be a modern and future focused police department,” Harvey said. “It makes us more diverse as far as our capabilities are concern.”

Last month, the department used the seizure funds to purchase a $27,128 drone.

Harvey said the motorcycles will be used for traffic enforcement, parades, special events and other activities.

The two used motorcycles should arrive in the three weeks after maintenance and repairs are done. Harvey said that two PPD patrol officers will go through a two-week training course starting next week to become certified operators.

Mayor Steve Presley said the motorcycles will make the community safer and supports the police department decision to make the acquisition.

“Motorcycles stand out more and they would help out with traffic enforcement,” Presley said. “It's a responsible way to use the funds and keep our citizens safe.”
